L5 Mononeuritis Is a Rare Cause of Foot Drop

L5 mononeuritis is a rare and often overlooked condition that can cause foot drop, a disorder characterized by difficulty lifting the front part of the foot. This condition occurs when the L5 nerve, located in the lower back, becomes inflamed or damaged. The L5 nerve plays a vital role in controlling the muscles responsible for foot movement, so when it is affected, it leads to weakness or paralysis in the foot and ankle. The primary causes of L5 mononeuritis include trauma, infections, or nerve compression, though it can also result from underlying conditions such as diabetes or autoimmune diseases. Foot drop caused by this rare disorder can significantly impact mobility. If you have this problem, it is strongly suggested that you are under the care of a podiatrist who can help you to effectively manage this condition.

Some foot conditions may require additional professional care. If you have any concerns, contact Monique Mitchell, DPM of Family Foot Centre. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Rare Foot Conditions

The majority of foot conditions are common and can be treated by a podiatrist.  Standard diagnostic procedures are generally used to identify specific conditions and treatment can be rendered. A podiatrist also treats rare foot conditions which can be difficult to diagnose and may need extra attention and care.

There are many rare foot conditions that can affect children. Some of these can include:

  • Freiberg’s disease
  • Kohler’s disease
  • Maffucci syndrome

Freiberg’s disease - This can be seen as a deterioration and flattening of a metatarsal bone that exists in the ball of the foot. It typically affects pre-teen and teenage girls, but can affect anyone at any age. Symptoms that can accompany this can be swelling, stiffness, and the patient may limp.

Kohler’s disease - This often targets the bone in the arch of the foot and affects younger boys. It can lead to an interruption of the blood supply which ultimately can lead to bone deterioration. The patient may limp or experience tenderness, swelling, and redness.

Maffucci syndrome - This affects the long bones in a child’s foot leading to the development of abnormal bone lesions. They are benign growths and typically develop in early childhood and the bones may be susceptible to breaking.

A podiatrist can properly diagnose and treat all types of rare foot conditions. If your child is affected by any of these symptoms or conditions, please don’t hesitate to call our office so the correct treatment method can begin.

Explaining Charcot Foot in Diabetic Patients

Charcot foot can develop in some people with diabetes as the result of peripheral neuropathy, which damages the nerves in the feet. This can lead to a loss of sensation, making it difficult to detect injuries such as fractures or joint dislocations. As a result, people may continue walking on an injured foot, causing further damage. Over time, the bones may weaken, leading to a collapse of the foot’s structure and significant changes in its shape. Symptoms of Charcot foot include swelling, redness, warmth, and a noticeable change in the shape of the foot or ankle. Without proper treatment, Charcot foot can increase the risk of foot ulcers, and, in severe cases, may require surgery or result in loss of limb. A podiatrist can assess the condition, provide immobilization options like specialized casts or braces, and recommend footwear to reduce pressure on the foot. In some cases, surgery may be necessary to stabilize the bones. If you are experiencing foot pain that may be related to peripheral neuropathy, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist for an exam and appropriate reatment.

Pros and Cons of Laser Toenail Treatment

Laser toenail treatment is an innovative procedure designed to treat fungal infections in the nails. The treatment works by using focused light to penetrate the nail and target the fungal cells, effectively killing the infection without harming the surrounding tissue. One of the main benefits of this treatment is that it is non-invasive and typically does not require recovery time, making it a convenient option for many. Additionally, it offers a high success rate with minimal side effects, such as slight discomfort during the procedure. However, there are some drawbacks to consider. Laser treatment can be expensive, and it may require multiple sessions to achieve the desired results. Furthermore, the effectiveness can vary depending on the severity of the infection and individual response. If you have toenail fungus and are considering this type of treatment, it is suggested that you consult with a podiatrist who can guide you on whether this treatment can help you.

Laser treatment can be an effective way to get rid of toenail fungus. If you have any questions about laser treatment, consult with Monique Mitchell, DPM from Family Foot Centre. Our doctor will assess your condition and provide you with quality treatment for fungal nails.

What Are Toenail Fungal Infections?

Onychomycosis, or fungal infection of the nail, is a relatively common and non-serious condition. Around 10 percent of U.S. citizens are afflicted with fungal nails. Common forms of fungus that infect the nail include dermatophytes, yeasts, and molds.

Symptoms of Toenail Fungal Infections Include:

  • Nail thickening
  • Brittleness of the nail
  • Discoloration of the nail

Diagnosis for Fungal Nails

Fungal infections are diagnosed by fungal culture and microscopy. This will rule out any other conditions such as nail trauma, psoriasis, lichen planus, and onychogryphosis.

What Is Laser Treatment?

Laser treatment is a non-invasive, safe, quick, and painless procedure that uses the heat from a laser to kill fungus in the nail. Each infected nail is targeted with a laser for several minutes. The treatment is usually utilized several different times over a select period. During this time, a podiatrist will keep an eye on the infection.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our office located in Garden Hills, Nassau, Bahamas . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot care needs.

Simple Exercises for Foot Health

Keeping your feet strong and flexible is essential for preventing pain and injuries. Regular foot exercises can improve circulation, build muscle strength, and maintain mobility. Toe taps are a simple way to get started. Sit with your feet flat on the floor and tap your toes while keeping your heels down. This boosts blood flow and flexibility. Another effective exercise is arch rolls, where you use a small ball, like a tennis ball, to roll under the arch of your foot, relieving tension and toning muscles. Heel raises are also great for strengthening. Stand and slowly lift your heels off the ground, balancing on your toes, then lower down gently. Repeat 10 to 15 times for the best results. If you experience persistent foot discomfort or pain, it is suggested that you see a podiatrist for expert advice and personalized care to keep your feet healthy.

Stretching the feet is a great way to prevent injuries. If you have any concerns with your feet consult with Monique Mitchell, DPM from Family Foot Centre. Our doctor will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

Stretching the Feet

Stretching the muscles in the foot is an important part in any physical activity. Feet that are tight can lead to less flexibility and make you more prone to injury. One of the most common forms of foot pain, plantar fasciitis, can be stretched out to help ease the pain. Stretching can not only ease pain from plantar fasciitis but also prevent it as well. However, it is important to see a podiatrist first if stretching is right for you. Podiatrists can also recommend other ways to stretch your feet. Once you know whether stretching is right for you, here are some excellent stretches you can do.

  • Using a foam roller or any cylindrical object (a water bottle or soda can will do), roll the object under your foot back and forth. You should also exert pressure on the object. Be sure to do this to both feet for a minute. Do this exercise three times each.
  • Similar to the previous one, take a ball, such as a tennis ball, and roll it under your foot while seated and exert pressure on it.
  • Grab a resistance band or towel and take a seat. If you are using a towel, fold it length wise. Next put either one between the ball of your foot and heel and pull with both hands on each side towards you. Hold this for 15 seconds and then switch feet. Do this three times for each foot.
  • Finally hold your big toe while crossing one leg over the other. Pull the toe towards you and hold for 15 seconds. Once again do this three times per foot.

It is best to go easy when first stretching your foot and work your way up. If your foot starts hurting, stop exercising and ice and rest the foot. It is advised to then see a podiatrist for help.
